In Pacific Island countries, agriculture represents a significant sector of the economy. They export mostly cash crop agricultural commodities that require labour-intensive processing, such as palm oil, copra, coconut oil, vanilla, coffee and cocoa.

In addition, the role of family in agricultural processes remains fundamental. The EU-funded FALAH project builds its multidisciplinary research around the strict connection between agriculture and food, and focuses on the family role in farming and food in the area of the Pacific Islands. The project will mobilise a network of European researchers partnered with institutions from Australia, Fiji, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu engaged in food security, environment and health. The final purpose of the project is to support family farming as a significant factor in food security.

The project brings together scientists and professional actors to share knowledge, innovative methods and research results to support the sustainability of Pacific island societies. This project mobilizes 95 researchers and doctoral students and three time phases are planned at different levels. In each phase, joint meetings in the form of workshops or conferences are planned. At the same time, common experimentation / exploration areas for future research are planned in the scopes of the Pacific (Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia). The assignments of the members of the scientific teams are defined on the basis of these joint meetings. Teams must also propose specific assignments based on the tasks they want to accomplish, the learning and / or enrichment. The number of stays will be 3 to 6 maximum per team during one year (9 to 18 for the total duration of the 3 phases of the project).
