More on the SPC – OCTs connection

The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal intergovernmental organisation in the region, owned and governed by its 26 member countries and territories. Since 1947, date of its creation, it has been supporting sustainable development in the Pacific, through science, knowledge and innovation.

At the OCTs level, the SPC is managing the PROTEGE programme. The Oceanian Regional Project of Territories for the Sustainable Management of Ecosystems (PROTEGE) is an initiative which aims to promote sustainable economic development and resilience in the face of climate change within the European Overseas Countries and Territories of the Pacific (OCTs), by relying on biodiversity and renewable natural resources. PROTEGE has two main objectives:

  • strengthening key primary sectors’ sustainability, climate-change adaptation and autonomy;
  • and enhancing ecosystem-service security by protecting water resources and biodiversity.
